Updated October 9, 2026: On September 29 OpenAI renamed the Pro tiers to Pro 100 (formerly 5X, $100) and Pro 200 (formerly 20X, $200) and added Pro 500 ($500, 25x Plus usage with Ultrafast). Pro 200 is open to new subscriptions again; new Pro 200 subscriptions get 10x Plus usage (existing subscribers keep 20x until October 29). The analysis below keeps the original 5X/20X wording. Official notice · Pro 100 / 200 / 500 comparison (Chinese)

You're deep in a refactor, Codex says "You've hit your usage limit", and the upgrade page is staring at you. Before you spend $100 or $200 a month, here's what the Pro tiers actually change for Codex — and how to tell whether you need them at all.

The price difference: Plus is $20/month, Pro 5X is $100, and Pro 20X is $200, with Codex included usage at 1x, 5x and 20x respectively. Compare your actual workload and credit purchases with those fixed fees. Pro 200 (formerly 20X) reopened for new subscriptions on September 29; new subscriptions get 10x Plus usage, and a Pro 500 tier now sits above it.

What each plan actually gives you

Since April 9, 2026, ChatGPT Pro has been split into two tiers, sitting above the $20 Plus plan:

PlanPrice (official)Codex usage vs. PlusExtras
Plus$20/mo1x baseline—
Pro 5X$100/mo5xSame core Pro capabilities as 20X
Pro 20X$200/mo20xSame core Pro capabilities as 5X, with higher included usage

Two things worth underlining:

  • The difference between the two Pro tiers is volume, not capability. Both get the same models. The September 10 pause on new 20X subscriptions ended on September 29, when the tier was renamed Pro 200 and reopened with 10x Plus usage for new subscriptions.
  • The launch promotion that gave the $100 tier 10x usage ended May 31, 2026. Plan around the standard 5x now.

How Codex limits actually work in 2026

Every plan carries two limits at once: a 5-hour rolling window and a weekly cap. Hitting either one stops you. Metering has been token-based since April 2026, so one "message" that refactors a large repo can cost tens of times more than a quick script fix. Local CLI messages and cloud tasks (including jobs kicked off from your phone) draw from the same pool.

The current official estimates depend on the model and workload, rather than one universal GPT-5.6 message count. Local and cloud work share the allowance; check the official usage guide and your dashboard for current windows and reset times.

Run /status inside Codex CLI (or check Codex settings → Usage) to see your own live numbers and reset times. And before concluding your plan is too small: in late June 2026 OpenAI's status page tracked an incident where Codex limits depleted faster than expected — occasionally the burn rate really is their bug, not your usage. A deeper troubleshooting walkthrough (in Chinese) is here: Codex "usage limit reached" fixes.

The math: credits vs. upgrading

Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits when they hit limits, which changes the decision from "upgrade or suffer" to a simple frequency question:

  • You overflow occasionally (a crunch week per month): stay on Plus, buy credits when needed. Cheapest path.
  • You buy credits basically every week: upgrade. Recurring credit top-ups cost more than the tier jump, and the 5X tier removes the constant interruption.
  • You're already on 5X and still hitting walls: note that 20X is twice the price for four times the capacity — the $200 tier is actually the better per-unit deal. Heavy daily Codex use lands here.

Model choice and task scope both affect consumption. Keep instructions focused and include relevant files; Astra Fast mode consumes credits at 2.5x its Standard rate. Check the model-specific rates rather than applying one multiplier to every model.

When Pro is NOT worth it

  • You code with Codex a few evenings a week. Plus's window recovers on a 5-hour rolling basis; casual use rarely sustains a weekly-cap collision.
  • Your usage is spiky and unpredictable. The API is pay-as-you-go with no 5-hour or weekly caps — for CI pipelines and automation it's often saner than any subscription, though sustained heavy use can cost more than $200/mo.
  • You want Pro for a "smarter" Codex. Same models on Plus and Pro. Pro buys you volume and a few extras, not intelligence.

GPT-5.6 is now generally available, GPT-6 Astra is documented, and GPT-6 reached the ChatGPT Chat tab on October 7. The earlier preview-only status no longer applies. GPT-5.5 will retire from ChatGPT, Work and Codex on October 14; API access is unaffected. See the official changelog.

Paying for Pro from China (or without a foreign card)

Here's where many readers get stuck: you've done the math, Pro is worth it, and then OpenAI's checkout rejects your mainland-issued card.

ChongPay handles the upgrade on your own ChatGPT account — you pay with WeChat Pay or Alipay, no foreign credit card needed, and the subscription lands on your account like a normal official one. The platform has completed 2,900+ orders as of publication. Current prices and delivery times for Plus, Pro 5X and Pro 20X are on the plans page, and there's a dedicated Codex recharge page explaining the developer-specific options. If you're starting from zero (no Plus yet), read How to Pay for ChatGPT Plus from China first; for a Chinese-language deep dive on choosing between the two Pro tiers, see Pro 5X vs 20X comparison.

FAQ

Q: What's the difference between ChatGPT Pro $100 and $200 for Codex? A: Volume only. Pro 100 gives 5x Plus's Codex usage; Pro 200 gives 10x for new subscriptions (20x for pre-September-29 subscribers until October 29); Pro 500 gives 25x plus Ultrafast. All share the same core Pro capabilities, and all three are open to new purchases.

Q: How many Codex messages do I get on each plan? A: It varies with the model, context and task size. Official message ranges are estimates, not fixed entitlements. Run /status in Codex CLI or check your usage dashboard for current limits and reset times.

Q: Should I buy credits or upgrade to Pro? A: Frequency decides. Occasional overflow → stay on Plus and buy credits. Weekly overflow → upgrade to Pro 5X. Already maxing Pro 100 → Pro 200 is twice the price for twice the capacity under the new 10x rule, and it is open to new purchases again; Pro 500 is the step above that.

Q: Does ChatGPT Pro give Codex access to better models than Plus? A: No. Plus and both Pro tiers use the same models in Codex. Pro buys higher usage limits and extras like Codex-Spark, not a smarter model.

Q: Can I subscribe to ChatGPT Pro from China without a foreign credit card? A: Yes. Services like ChongPay complete the subscription on your own account and accept WeChat Pay or Alipay. See the plans page for current pricing and delivery times.
